Some aspects of the national curriculum and the teaching of civic education in the Czech Republic

Changes to the political system that took place in the Czech Republic in 1989 led to a need for urgent changes in the content of curriculum materials and in the way that social sciences were taught in Czech schools. The Ministry of Education, Youth and Sport of the Czech Republic recently changed some basic principles of the educational system. These changes have included the creation of new directive standards of education, but the problems of education in relation to the national curriculum still remain among the most discussed topics in the Czech Republic. The authors of this paper offer factual information about some of the problems surrounding the creation of new educational materials and the teaching of civic education. It is clear that the Czech Republic has to continue with the transformation of education, taking into account the important demands of the 21st century, and to stress the role of education in developing children's identity and citizenship. Civic education may not only be seen as a school subject, but also as a basic principle of the learning and teaching process. This means that all teachers should understand the main democratic principles of the country and apply them in their work with children.
