Drawing on the example of a citizenship education initiative based in the West Midlands, this paper highlights the need for Higher Education institutions to reconceptualise their roles and relationships with schools in order to provide effective support to schools in relation to citizenship education, as well as ensuring that citizenship education becomes central to mainstream education agendas. The paper focuses on three key aspects of changing professional practice which will enable a range of educational practitioners to respond effectively to the challenges of citizenship, and it identifies lessons for Higher Education: the need to expand and deepen partnership models of working; the need to develop and maintain a reciprocal relationship between policy and practice; the need to engage a range of civil society organisations in citizenship education.
