This article introduces a problem-based learning activity based upon the sinking of the Titanic and discusses its surprising effectiveness (activity materials are available from the authors)1. Rich in themes and lessons related to civic education and history teaching, this activity provides some insight into how we might approach three of the most important and challenging tasks for developing citizens, whether in middle school or in teacher-preparation programmes.
