In France, history and geography are compulsory subjects for the three last years of elementary school (named cycle 3). The curricula are organised by contents, and the finalities are prescribed. Roughly they consist in developing the children's personality and abilities, socialising them, developing their collective identity, and empowering them as young citizens. I focus the present reflection on the social and civic finalities. Using the results of a large enquiry on teaching history and geography in elementary school (Audigier & Tutiaux-Guillon), we1 have developed in the IUFM of Lyon a specific research on elementary teachers' attitudes towards such aims and on which initial training would be relevant. Do teachers take in account the social and civic finalities of history and geography? How? How could the new teachers be empowered for such practices?
