National education purporting to reinforce nationalism, loyalty and national homogeneous commonality is being challenged by cosmopolitan learning and global changes. It is limiting individuals' freedom to arrange their lives themselves, to reflect on and to critically scrutinize knowledge, values and norms. I present here a critique of such a purpose and argue for a cosmopolitan approach to learning which includes the right and opportunity for children and young people to consider in principle anything that affects them in the nation's common compulsory school.
