In the year 1999, a new course of pedagogy implemented into a primary teacher education programme was looked into in terms of its contents, processes and theoretical principles. A variety of approaches to encourage student-teachers to transform learning about human values into problem solving activities for pupils aged 6 - 12 was suggested. The aims of the course were to develop students' and, later on, pupils' understanding of democratic values and to develop positive attitudes towards citizenship issues. In the year 2000, an innovated course focused on integrating topics of citizenship and multicultural values into the curriculum of primary teacher education was discussed and presented at the CiCe conference in Athens. In the year 2001, an analysis of three educational programmes including science, history and geography courses for primary school student-teachers was carried out. In the year 2002, the focus was on investigating into a selected sample of primary school children and their attitudes to citizenship. On the basis of this investigation a curriculum change concerning social sciences in primary teacher education programme will be proposed when designing a new 5-year primary teacher education programme.
