Since the restoration of independence in Latvia considerable progress has been achieved in the implementation of changes in education. Today we are eager to strengthen our traditions and develop new initiatives, however, the contradiction between providing a reasonable balance and coordination in the implementation of humane values outlines manifold tendencies in the education of the young generation, especially when searching for pedagogical values in Latvian national upbringing in relation to the European tendencies in education. When solving the given issue, the interaction between the traditional and innovative features has always been topical in the pedagogical ideas of Latvia. Moreover, today the problem has acquired different aspects as well. The restoration of statehood and independence, competition of cultures on a global scale, tendencies towards internationalisation and localisation interact with the threats to Latvian self-awareness and national identity and set new objectives for the evaluation of European values and Latvian identity in the pedagogical theory and practice.
