Comments: This paper will examine why lecturers in higher education institutions, from various disciplines including teacher education, are interested in the emergence of a European identity in children. Is it an interest in the development of nesting identities, or in the creation of a new form of European nationalism? What do members of the CiCe network understand by terms such as 'citizenship' and 'identity'? This paper brings together the results of a small-scale survey, and suggests that there are a kaleidoscopic pattern of views, and that there may be a divergence between the views of European politicians and administrators and those in education.
