Citizenship Education in Ireland: Recent and Current Practice

Comments: Ireland - which has come to known as the Celtic Tiger - has undergone major socio-economic and cultural change in recent years. Increased urbanisation, affluence and changes in traditional values have brought problems associated with modernisation. In this context, the new CSPE (Civic, Social and Political Education) programme for secondary level education was developed to prepare students for active participatory citizenship. In this paper the broader curriculum components in which aspects of citizenship education are developed within schools are examined on the basis of an empirical investigation. The new subject CPSE and the evaluation procedures proposed for this subject area are critically reviewed
