This paper studies the effect of the Euro on identity building, and compares national versus supranational feeling of belonging of teenagers in France and the UK. Loss of culture and identity are the main fears expressed by opponents of the EU, who claim that the EU reduces members’ cultures to a single mould. Introducing the euro in the UK translates into loss of control, independence and identity. But is this a cause or consequence of the refusal to introduce the Euro? How do currencies contribute to a sense of identity? There are noticeable differences between French and English adolescents’ attitudes towards Europe, the EU and the Euro. Education and the media have crucial roles in expanding knowledge and understanding of the EU.
