This paper describes a collaborative project in which Swedish teacher education students at Malmo studying geography and the environment carried out an investigation in a visual way. They examined how young people use local public spaces, which they are doing more than before. Those under eighteen lack meeting places which are interesting for them, and girls wanted places like cafés, where they could sit and talk; while boys want recreation halls with different workshops. There were fewer opportunities in old working-class districts of the city, and these young people tended to stay in their district. The students found, from their observations and studies, that young people are heterogeneous and that this must be recognised in considering their needs.
