Teachers’ discourses in relation to cooperation and competition

This is part of the Hungarian-Slovenian-UK study of teachers’ views of competition and cooperation. All teachers interviewed suggested society needs people who can both co-operate and compete. Awareness of positive and negative factors about both phenomena helps teachers prepare children to cooperate and compete in a tolerant, responsible and respectful way. Teachers believed that it was mainly co-operation that should be encouraged: this develops tolerance, openness to difference and the ability to learn from others. They also recognised forms of competitiveness can enable children become independent, creative and successful and test their knowledge. But the child's integrity should not be threatened by this: teachers believed there is so much competitiveness in the society that school should mainly focus on cooperation.
